Introduction
to Infinitone 2

When I discovered Infinitone 2, its promise to break free from the conventional 12-tone system immediately caught my attention. I was curious to see whether the plugin could open up fresh avenues for creativity while still fitting naturally into my daily workflow.

For this review, I set aside several weeks to test the plugin across a variety of projects. Below are my thoughts!

Sound – Score: 5/5

When I first loaded Infinitone 2 into my DAW, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I’ve always been attracted to plugins that promise to “break the rules” and push the boundaries of conventional sound. A glance at the unfinished project files on my hard drive will show quirky ideas, bleep bloops, and a whole lot of exploration so delightfully off‐kilter that it won’t exactly land me on the Top 40 anytime soon.

So naturally, this plugin seemed like a perfect fit based on its description alone. In front of me was something that promised to unlock a universe of pitches beyond the usual 12‐tone scale. I was curious: What exactly would that sound like? Would it satiate my taste for weirdness?

The answer is: It sure did. Over the past several weeks of testing, I’ve come to appreciate that Infinitone 2 is a wild ride—a journey into uncharted sonic territories that can feel oddly “weird in a fun way.”

The “Weird in a Fun Way” Factor

Before continuing, I should remark that Infinitone as a software has come a long way. When the Infinitone crew released their first version of Infinitone a few years ago, it was only a MIDI Plugin. However, with the upgrade to 2.0, it now becomes a full‐on instrument. At its core, Infinitone 2 is a dynamic microtonal synthesizer and MIDI effects plugin, allowing you to explore scales and pitches that defy the constraints of standard tuning systems.

Rather than being limited to the 12 semitones of a traditional scale, you can break free of those rules, divide octaves, and access the “notes between the notes,” as the developers describe it. This opens up a new dimension of sound that is liberating and intellectually stimulating as Infinitone also doubles as an educational tool.

In short, the sonic output is unique, vibrant, and consistently engaging. The unconventional microtonal approach produces sounds that feel incredibly outside the box. Many of these sounds are different than anything else on the market and with a sea of similar-sounding plugins out there, that’s a plus.

Exploring the Extensive Preset Library

One of the highlights of Infinitone 2 is its expansive preset library. For a plugin that deals with such esoteric concepts as micro tuning, the range of presets available is a fantastic welcome mat to such a concept. Each preset is designed to offer immediate inspiration, serving as a springboard for creative exploration.

One of my favorites was the “Dynamic THX,” which allows you to recreate that over‐dramatic ear‐bursting THX sound that played at the beginning of movies in the 1990s/00s. With one key press, a pre‐programmed chord starts in unison and then slowly expands into an atmospheric masterpiece worthy of a movie theater.

Ease of Use and User Experience – Score: 4/5

Rules are Meant To Be Broken

Of course, there’s something undeniably captivating about a tool that doesn’t play by the rules. Infinitone 2 exudes a certain eccentricity that should prove incredibly tempting to the experimental types. It’s weird and wild on purpose, and it’s almost as if the plugin encourages you to abandon the safe confines of conventional harmony and dive headfirst into a world of playful chaos.

Achieving interesting results is, for the most part, easy enough. I recall one particular instance where I was working on a track that needed an element of unpredictability. I set out to create some sounds that felt intentionally “off‐kilter,” and Infinitone 2 delivered in spades. The result was a melody that felt organic and spontaneous as if it had a personality of its own. It wasn’t perfectly polished it felt deliberately imperfect—and that’s exactly what I was looking for.

That said, Infinitone 2 may not be the most beginner-friendly plugin to dive into. While its layout is straightforward enough for users to select a preset and start experimenting, truly grasping its full potential requires some practice and tutorial watching. Because of this, watching the official walkthrough video is highly recommended, as there is a learning curve to mastering its features.

The effort is well worth it—once you become familiar with Infinitone 2, it reveals itself as a remarkably imaginative and powerful tool. However, since this section does evaluate ease of use for first-time users, Infinitone 2 falls just short of being newbie intuitive. A built-in tutorial in a future update could go a long way in making the learning process smoother.

Features – Score: 5/5

Back to its feature set, in a nod to its origins, Infinitone 2 isn’t just an instrument—it’s also a fully functional MIDI Effect in Logic. Add it as an FX to any VST that is MPE compatible, and anything you do in Infinitone will play through your synth of choice. I loved that this was able to bring new tones out of virtual instruments I’ve already run through the wringer. Plus, with the various macro controls that allow users to sculpt the sound with remarkable precision, Infinitone 2 offered me a hands-on approach to sound design that rewarded persistent tweaking.

Infinitone 2’s patches work via an empty key trigger system where you can increase the number of steps to get from one key to another. There is so much going into this that it would take many paragraphs to explain. However, as a quick example, there would typically be 12 steps from D to D Sharp. With Infinitone, you can divide the octaves and make the steps 24 or 48, allowing for some nice “notes between the notes.”

The feature set of Infinitone 2 is extensive. I appreciate that it combines microtonal synthesis with robust MIDI effects capabilities and a highly flexible preset system. This breadth of functionality and creative control makes it a workhorse for creating unique sounds.

Value – Score: 5/5

Is There A Such Thing as “Too Weird”?

Reflecting on my time with Infinitone 2, I realize that its value lies not just in the sounds it produces but also in the creative mindset it fosters. Using the plugin forces you to abandon preconceived rules of what music should sound like.

Infinitone’s creators have delivered a robust, creative tool that is particularly suited for those interested in exploring microtonal and unconventional soundscapes. If creative and compelling is what you are searching for, Infinitone 2 deserves a spot in your arsenal and more than justifies the price tag.

Final Thoughts

Infinitone 2 is a fascinating experiment that pushes the boundaries of what a synthesizer plugin or MIDI Effect can be. It marries the technical complexity of microtonal theory with a user interface that ultimately rewards persistence and curiosity. Its strengths lie in its ability to produce tones that are quirky, unconventional, and imbued with a personality all their own. The weirdness and character of the plugin are not merely gimmicks—they are at the very core of what makes Infinitone 2 a tool for sonic exploration.

In short, Infinitone 2 dares to be different. It is a reminder that music is an art form that thrives on exploration and experimentation. Whether you are a seasoned sound designer looking for new avenues of expression or someone ready to venture into experimental territory, Infinitone 2 offers an experience that challenges you to think outside conventional musical boundaries. Its design encourages you to push past the familiar and embark on a journey into the unknown.

For anyone looking to break free from the predictable and explore uncharted sonic landscapes, Infinitone 2 is an invitation to redefine your musical boundaries. It transforms the act of sound creation into a playful, exploratory process—one that often results in unexpected and intriguing compositions.

It stands out as a capable instrument for experimental and avant‐garde production, and its blend of technical innovation and creative freedom makes it a valuable tool for those willing to explore beyond the conventional.

If you are seeking a tool to add unpredictability, creative inspiration, and a fresh perspective to your music, Infinitone 2 is worth considering.
