Opinion: Why Drake Is A Giver And A Taker

Multi-platinum selling artistย Drakeย is undoubtedly a shrewd businessman. He has mastered the art of finding young artists and helping them explode, in turn creating a long-lasting relationship with tomorrowโ€™s biggest stars. But is there a negative aspect to this? Letโ€™s look into this a little further.

Some of the worldโ€™s biggest rappers owe their careers to Drake.ย In 2011,ย Drakeย posted unknown artistย A$ap Rockyโ€™sย โ€œPurple Swagโ€ย video on his blog, significantly raising his exposure. โ€œThat pretty mothafuckaโ€ is extremely grateful, saying that he owesย Drakeย โ€œforeverโ€ for this. This is far from the only time thatย Drakeย has done a move of this kind. It is clearly a calculated strategy.

Althoughย Migosโ€™ย โ€œVersaceโ€ย had already blown up,ย Drakeย jumped on the remix and created even more hype around the 3 young ATLiens.ย Grime artistย Skeptaย has been popular for around a decade, some might even say that heโ€™s a legend, but this popularity didnโ€™t really spill out to the other side of the Atlantic. By posting a link toย Skeptaโ€™sย hit singleย “Shutdown”ย on his Instagram page,ย Drakeย opened upย Skeptaย and grime music to a much larger audience. His love for the Tottenham native didnโ€™t stop here โ€“ he went as far as gettingย Skeptaโ€™sย crew (BBK) tatted on him.ย Skeptaย payed back the favor by getting a tattoo of the famous OVO owl. ย It was also a clear sign that the two formed a great relationship whenย Drakeย brought him out to performย โ€œShutdownโ€ย at last yearโ€™s Wireless Festival. Bromance.

Drake also boostedย Futureโ€™sย rise to becoming one of hip hopโ€™s biggest artists when he jumped on a remix ofย โ€œTony Montanaโ€.ย  Itโ€™s clear to see that this cemented a long-term relationship that benefited both artists equally. The two released a collaborative mix-tape last year which was generally well received. ย Drakeโ€™sย flow was heavily influenced byย Futureย โ€“ some might even say he was jacking his swag.

Drakeย sort of has a reputation for jumping on trends while theyโ€™re hot.

If you havenโ€™t heard ofย โ€œCha Chaโ€ย by now, chances are youโ€™re living under a rock. Itโ€™s like someone telling me they havenโ€™t watched Home Alone. Then I automatically know their childhood sucked. But back to the point.ย The viral hit โ€œCha Chaโ€ by newcomerย D.R.A.Mย was released in March โ€“ but it took around 9 months for it to blow up thanks to a co-sign by none other than Queen Bey. All it took was her dancing to the song and posting a video of that on Instagram, quoting : โ€œThis song makes me happy!โ€.ย Drakeย was seen dancing to the tune just 10 days later at Club Shay in Chi-Town.ย Just 2 months after Cha Cha went viral, Drake releasedย โ€œHotline Blingโ€, which ย would become number 3 on the Billboard top 100, charting for 52 weeks (52!).

The two songs were so similar that Appleโ€™s Beats 1 called it โ€œCha Cha remixโ€ on the day it was released. And this was during OVO Sound Radio, which you probably know isย Drakeโ€™sย label. I would imagine that somebody working for OVO providedย โ€œHotline Blingโ€ย to Beats 1, while still being called โ€œCha Chaโ€ remix. Why the change of name to โ€œHotline Blingโ€? Iโ€™m not gonna get into the financial numbers, but money talks. You know where Iโ€™m going with this. Drakeโ€™s version of “Cha Cha”ย nearly reached number 1 on the Top 100 billboard.

At first,ย D.R.A.Mย seemed to take it pretty well.ย On the 30รจmeย of September 2015, he said: โ€œโ€œFor it to not even have been a year? Itโ€™s very flattering. Know what Iโ€™m saying. Heโ€™s the first powerhouse to be heavily influenced by the VA wave that was influenced by myself and Gabe [Niles]. And like, itโ€™s pretty much just a stamp that what weโ€™re going is something real here. Ya know, weโ€™re going to continue on. I dont think he is going to be the only that will be heavily influenced by our wave and sound. I just think he was the first. And ya know, over here weโ€™re embracing it.โ€

I mean, when youโ€™re new to the game, aย Drakeย co-sign can be nothing but beneficial.ย I know what youโ€™re thinking; itโ€™s Hip-Hop, and everyone draws inspiration from other artists. Iโ€™m with you on that.ย What seems really disrespectful to me though is thatย Drakeย never even creditedย D.R.A.Mย for the song. To package the track as a single of his own when he originally released it as “Cha Cha remix” is just playing the game in a really sneaky, traitorous way.ย Less than month later,ย D.R.A.Mย tweeted,ย โ€œYeah, I feel I got jacked for my record…But Iโ€™m GOOD.โ€

In his Fader interview from this past September, Drake even admitted to being โ€œinspiredโ€ by hot tracks and making them his own.ย He said:ย โ€œItโ€™s just, literally, Iโ€™ve recognized the potential and greatness inย this piece, and I want to take my stab at it too,โ€ย โ€œIโ€™ll hear peopleโ€™s stuffโ€ฆand Iโ€™ll just give my interpretation of how I would have done it.โ€ย Straight jacking or inspiration? Itโ€™s hard to tell. Though both tracks use a different sample, thereโ€™s no denying that they sound very similar and the timing of Hotline Blingโ€™s release is suspect too. On top of everything, the fact that it was released on OVO sound radio with the title โ€œCha Cha remixโ€ is a major red flag that this was more jacking than inspiration. But Iโ€™ll leave that up to you to decide.

But thatโ€™s not all. Even theย โ€œHotline Blingโ€ย video was called out for swag jacking byย Sauce Walka, member of the Houston duo theย Sauce Twinz. He claimed that Drake was copying the โ€œdripโ€ style with his dance moves in the video.

All things considered, didย Drakeย really do anything when it comes to this track? He remixedย D.R.A.Mโ€™sย track (well, his producer did), and though this canโ€™t be verified, thereโ€™s a good chance that it was ghostwritten for him. Of course, it takes more than that to create a single with as much success.ย Drakeย has proven time again that his formula works, but you still have to question his work ethic.

You also have the issue ofย โ€œToo Goodโ€, a track offย Views From The 6.ย Keayana Coleย sentย Drakeโ€™sย father a snippet of one of her tracks, and next thing you know,ย Drakeย uses it on one of the most popular tracks of his new album without even given any credit to her.

Views from the 6ย ouย Thievin in the 6?ย Should I keep going? Yeah? Ok.

What about the timeย Drakeย stoleย 4 Tayโ€™sย lyrics onย YGโ€™sย โ€œWho Do You Loveโ€?

4 Tayย tweeted: “New Song w/ @YG Feat @Drake In This Song Drake Copys My Lyrics & Lines From My PlayazClub Song & Pays No Homage! ???ย ยซ

Selonย 4 Tayโ€™sย manager, their team andย Drakeโ€™sย label agreed to settle this issue out of court, with OVO payingย 4 Tayย 100,000$ for straight jacking his lyrics. Winning.

Whileย Drakeย undeniably helps newer artists come up in the scene, as well as already established artists, in the case ofย Skepta, his work ethic is still highly questionable. Today it seems like his formula is just finding any trend to jump on, ย often without even crediting the original artist. ย Glory hog.
