Following the release of the highly acclaimedย Post-traumatique,ย Mike Shinodaย swiftly returns with the more light-hearted release,ย Dropped Frames, Vol 1ย โ an album created over the course of lockdown with the fans, for the fans.ย ย
Heavily inspired by fan suggestions throughoutย an ongoing series of Twitch streams,ย Dropped Frames, Vol 1ย sees the veteran musician completely at ease with experimentation,ย with each and every track playfully toying with genre influences in such a manner that both entertains, yet still delivers an excellent listening experience.ย
Taking a break from a seemingly endless source of inspiration,ย Mikeย was kind enough to take some time to answer a few questions about the release, among a few other things!ย ย
AltWire [Mark Stoneman]: Hi,ย Mike! First off, congratulations on the release of your newest album โDropped Frames, Vol 1โ! I suppose weย do notย need to ask howย you haveย been coping with being shut indoors all day. What was the inspiration behind beginning to stream the creative process with your music, and at what point would you say the idea of actually releasing a โTwitch albumโ first occurred to you?ย
Mike Shinoda: I donโt know if I even consider Dropped Frames an โalbumโ series. The live stream this music comesย from isย really the nucleus. I make new things every weekday from 10am to 1pm PST; at that pace, I could make an album every three weeks. So,ย releasing the music is an inevitableย by-product.ย
AW: Before touching on the more experimental side of things, โOpen Doorโย immediatelyย stands out as an extremely optimistic anthemย about overcoming adversity and achieving your goals.ย Would you say that the track is something of an encouraging love letter to aspiring fans?ย ย
MS:ย Sure,ย thatโsย definitely one of the reads. Like most of us, I wrote it from the perspective of waiting for something to happen, for something to reveal itself and say, โthis is the path that you should take next.โย
AW: Welcoming fans aboard to contribute to โOpen Doorโ was a wonderfully rare opportunity for newer musicians;ย with any future โDropped Framesโ volumes that might be on the horizon, do you plan on holding more competitions for fan involvement?ย ย
MS:ย Sure, if the moment seems right.ย
AW: A few of your recent releases aside from โDropped Framesโย have been collaborations. Are there any upcoming collabs youโre excited for, or would like to plug?ย
MS:ย Not at this moment!ย
AW: โSuper Galaxticaโ sounds like something scooped up from aย classic arcade title.ย From having previously worked onย film soundtracks and 8-Bit Rebellion and LP Recharge, have there been a few potential video game soundtrack ideas/offers in the past that intrigued you?ย Are there any series you wish you could do the score for?ย
MS:ย I havenโt been offered anything interesting, but Iโm open to the idea. I play Overwatch, Fortnite, and a little bit of Minecraft; Iโm also a big fan of Zelda,ย Halo,ย Metroid, and Mario. Most of thoseย havenโtย historically gone to mainstream musicians for music or done collaborations. But anything is possible.ย
AW: Branching offย that previous question,ย it isย no secret that you are a little bit of a gamer. Weโve seen a few sessions of Animal Crossing on your stream as of late. What are some of your all-timeย favoriteย video games,ย and else are you playingย at the moment?ย
MS:ย My top games would probably be Metroid, Zelda Breath Of The Wild,ย Mario 3, Mega Man (for the art, not the game itself), and Halo.ย Honorableย mention to the Medalย Ofย Honorย and Call Of Duty franchises.ย
AW: With so much of the album rooted in experimentationย and pushing you out of your comfort zones, have you discovered any newย favoriteย instruments/synthesisers thatย you could potentially see fitting in with future material?ย ย
MS:ย Iโm getting my Teenage Engineering OP-Z fixed, so Iโm excited about getting that back. And while I donโt use my MPC60 on the stream, because itโs too slow, I love that machine.ย
AW: Whilst reviewing previous careerย material during a stream,ย when selecting your preferred tracks the term โno-brainerโ comes up a lot โ are there a couple of โno-brainerโย favoritesย from โDropped Frames, Vol. 1โ that immediately come to mind, and if so, why?ย ย
MS:ย Superย Galaxtica,ย Duckbot, Osiris, and El Reyย Demonioย are probably myย favorites. Lots of little sonic gems and happy accidents in there.ย
AW: Itโsย clear from the very first glance that โDropped Frames, Vol. 1โ was aย funย creative processย –ย are there any momentsย on the albumย that you perhaps were a little less thrilled about?ย ย
MS:ย I wasย really happyย with all these tracks, actually. I think you can tell from the names of the tracks. I wasnโt sure if some of the tracks would work when I sat down to make themโsome of the fan requests were so random! But I think these all came out pretty good.ย
AW: Have you been tempted at all to include a few โDropped Frames, Vol. 1โย tracks to future live setlists? (โDuckbotโ seems perfect for a bass-heavy/electronic loving crowd, but โBooty Downโโฆ weโre looking at you.)ย ย
MS:ย Maybe Iโll just play Booty Down 10-30 times, and go home?ย
