Then I hit the RNDM button for the first time.

Out came an EDM track. This had layers, movement, drums, and a clear sense of direction. It sounded like something that was already in progress.

I went for the tempo buttons, slowed it down a little, and quickly realized just how brilliant a device this is for kids who are first entering the world of music. The magic of music creation, presented right there at their fingertips, without a shred of theory or production knowledge needed.

Hands on with the myTRACKS

Playtime Engineering, the small San Francisco company behind the Blipblox line, describes the myTRACKS as “a toy-like sequencer, sampler, and drum machine.” “Toy-like” is not a throwaway word here. At $349, it sits in the same general price range as gear like the Novation Circuit Tracks, but visually, it’s clearly intended for children.

The knobs and levers are hard plastic. Pushing the levers, they offer firm, deliberate resistance, and the controls feel closer to a durable children’s toy than a boutique music device, making the concept of music production feel more play-like. Still, I wouldn’t recommend letting your child throw it. This isn’t some Fisher-Price truck designed to take a partial beating.

The funny thing is, despite its fun exterior, there is a real little groovebox under the plastic. There are five independent audio tracks: one for drums and four for instruments. The sound library covers guitars, piano, organ, orchestral tones, percussion, synths, and a bit of sample-based хип-хоп flavor. Each set of 25 Play Pads is harmonically matched, so a kid can mash buttons without instantly creating an inharmonious disaster.

And can I say thank god for that last part? A lot of kids’ music toys just let children make a racket while their parents sob over the annoying sounds. The myTRACKS makes their outputs feel like something Daddy or Mommy would have made.

There is also a built-in microphone for sampling. Samples are trimmed, normalized, and mapped across the pads without asking the user to understand any of that. Two effect levers handle things like filtering, delay, and pitch movement, and each can be routed per track.

The sound itself is lo-fi and digital. Through the built-in speaker, it has a slightly crushed quality, somewhere between a small Bluetooth speaker and an old toy sampler. Plug in headphones, and the quality is definitely better. The sounds still have a digital edge, but they breathe a little more, and it becomes clearer that the speaker is doing a lot of the flattening.

For a kid, the speaker’s fine. For an adult, comparing it to an MPC, no, it is not going to win that fight.

The RNDM button is the star.

Press RNDM, and a full pattern appears. Sometimes it leans hip-hop. Sometimes it lands closer to trance or EDM. But it always sounded complete, and never like someone dropped a keyboard down a flight of stairs. Unsure what it’s doing under the hood, but whether it is pulling from prebuilt musical material,or generating from the loaded set, or doing some combination of both, whatever it’s doing, it sounds great.

Right next to it is FREAK, which throws random notes across the tracks in a burst of controlled chaos. RNDM feels like “make me something.” FREAK feels like “mess this up.” Both are fun, but RNDM is the one that gives a child an immediate win.

The catch is that MyTRACKS only wants to go so far.

MyTRACKS is not a junior MPC. The pads are non-velocity-sensitive. They feel a little stiff, and you are not going to teach a kid finger drumming on this. You are not chopping samples in any serious way. You are not assembling elaborate arrangements or automating detailed parameter moves.

Modern MPCs are basically DAWs with pads. MyTRACKS is simpler than that. It turns loop-making into play.

There is a ceiling, and a motivated kid will eventually hit it. Once they start asking for DAW-level control, more precision, or more room to build, this may one day feel limiting. In that sense, it works better as a first spark than a long-term workstation. To make them feel, at six or eight or ten years old, like they are making music instead of just pressing noisy buttons.

That is why RNDM works so well. And unlike many children’s music toys, it is not grating. Parents may hear the RNDM button five thousand times, but at least what comes out sounds good.

However, there are still some great features for adults. The myTRACKS has a five-pin DIN MIDI out, and USB-C MIDI in and out, for DAWs such as Ableton и Logic. It offers single-channel and multi-channel MIDI modes, with each track assigned to its own channel in multi-channel mode. Firmware 2.0 added the ability to record MIDI clips from a DAW directly into track 1-4, making it possible to load myTRACKS with your own short sequences rather than relying only on built in material.

A battery-powered, child-safe groovebox that can sequence external synths over MIDI has real live-performance potential. I do not think that is the main reason to buy it, but the bones are there.

Sound packs are handled over USB-C through a Chrome browser. Current packs include Hip-Hop, First Chair, Synth Pack, Mega Mix, SOLARpower by DISKQ, Drumroll, please! и Retro Drive, a Driver 405/ DJ Roy LaCroix pack with a retro electronic slant.

One thing to know: installing a new instrument pack replaces the existing instrument pack on the device. Set Collections also overwrite any sets you have made yourself. It is manageable, but do not treat the packs like extra folders you can keep stacking forever.

At $349, the Blipblox myTRACKS sits close enough to adult grooveboxes that some people will compare it that way. Using Circuit Tracks или MPC gives you more control, deeper sequencing, and a clearer path into serious production. However, I do not think that is a useful comparison.

The myTRACKS combines child-safe design, multi-track music creation, built-in sampling, MIDI support, battery power, and a sound library that’s fun. I cannot think of much else that covers that same ground.

What it nails is the first five minutes. The RNDM button makes children’s music creation feel like magic.

Check out more reviews здесь.

Fifteen minutes after the Blipblox myTRACKS arrived at my doorstep, I had it sitting on the desk with the built-in … Читать далее

[1790
1531
post-21092635","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-hardware-reviews","tag-editors-picks","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-50
["GET
