Multi-platinum selling artist\u00a0Drake<\/strong>\u00a0is undoubtedly a shrewd businessman. He has mastered the art of finding young artists and helping them explode, in turn creating a long-lasting relationship with tomorrow\u2019s biggest stars. But is there a negative aspect to this? Let\u2019s look into this a little further.<\/p>\n

Some of the world\u2019s biggest rappers owe their careers to Drake.\u00a0In 2011,\u00a0Drake<\/strong>\u00a0posted unknown artist\u00a0<\/strong>A$ap Rocky\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cPurple Swag\u201d<\/em>\u00a0video on his blog, significantly raising his exposure. \u201cThat pretty mothafucka\u201d is extremely grateful, saying that he owes\u00a0Drake<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cforever\u201d for this. This is far from the only time that\u00a0Drake<\/strong>\u00a0has done a move of this kind. It is clearly a calculated strategy.<\/p>\n

Although\u00a0<\/strong>Migos\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cVersace\u201d<\/em>\u00a0had already blown up,\u00a0Drake<\/strong>\u00a0jumped on the remix and created even more hype around the 3 young ATLiens.\u00a0Grime artist\u00a0Skepta<\/strong>\u00a0has been popular for around a decade, some might even say that he\u2019s a legend, but this popularity didn\u2019t really spill out to the other side of the Atlantic. By posting a link to\u00a0Skepta\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0hit single\u00a0“Shutdown”<\/em>\u00a0on his Instagram page,\u00a0Drake<\/strong>\u00a0opened up\u00a0Skepta<\/strong>\u00a0and grime music to a much larger audience. His love for the Tottenham native didn\u2019t stop here \u2013 he went as far as getting\u00a0Skepta\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0crew (BBK) tatted on him.\u00a0Skepta<\/strong>\u00a0payed back the favor by getting a tattoo of the famous OVO owl. \u00a0It was also a clear sign that the two formed a great relationship when\u00a0<\/strong>Drake<\/strong>\u00a0brought him out to perform\u00a0\u201cShutdown\u201d<\/em>\u00a0at last year\u2019s Wireless Festival. Bromance.<\/p>\n

Drake also boosted\u00a0Future\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0rise to becoming one of hip hop\u2019s biggest artists when he jumped on a remix of\u00a0\u201cTony Montana\u201d<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s clear to see that this cemented a long-term relationship that benefited both artists equally. The two released a collaborative mix-tape last year which was generally well received. \u00a0Drake\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0flow was heavily influenced by\u00a0Future<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 some might even say he was jacking his swag.<\/p>\n

Drake<\/strong>\u00a0sort of has a reputation for jumping on trends while they\u2019re hot.<\/p>\n

If you haven\u2019t heard of\u00a0\u201cCha Cha\u201d<\/em>\u00a0by now, chances are you\u2019re living under a rock. It\u2019s like someone telling me they haven\u2019t watched Home Alone. Then I automatically know their childhood sucked. But back to the point.\u00a0The viral hit \u201cCha Cha<\/em>\u201d by newcomer\u00a0D.R.A.M<\/strong>\u00a0was released in March \u2013 but it took around 9 months for it to blow up thanks to a co-sign by none other than Queen Bey. All it took was her dancing to the song and posting a video of that on Instagram, quoting : \u201cThis song makes me happy!\u201d.\u00a0<\/strong>Drake<\/strong>\u00a0was seen dancing to the tune just 10 days later at Club Shay in Chi-Town.\u00a0Just 2 months after Cha Cha went viral, Drake released\u00a0<\/em>\u201cHotline Bling\u201d<\/em>, which \u00a0would become number 3 on the Billboard top 100, charting for 52 weeks (52!).<\/p>\n

The two songs were so similar that Apple\u2019s Beats 1 called it \u201cCha Cha remix<\/em>\u201d on the day it was released. And this was during OVO Sound Radio, which you probably know is\u00a0Drake\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>label. I would imagine that somebody working for OVO provided\u00a0<\/em>\u201cHotline Bling\u201d<\/em>\u00a0to Beats 1, while still being called \u201cCha Cha<\/em>\u201d remix. Why the change of name to \u201cHotline Bling\u201d? I\u2019m not gonna get into the financial numbers, but money talks. You know where I\u2019m going with this. Drake\u2019s version of “Cha Cha”<\/em>\u00a0nearly reached number 1 on the Top 100 billboard.<\/p>\n

At first,\u00a0D.R.A.M<\/strong>\u00a0seemed to take it pretty well.\u00a0On the 30th<\/sup>\u00a0of September 2015, he said: \u201c\u201cFor it to not even have been a year? It\u2019s very flattering. Know what I\u2019m saying. He\u2019s the first powerhouse to be heavily influenced by the VA wave that was influenced by myself and Gabe [Niles]. And like, it\u2019s pretty much just a stamp that what we\u2019re going is something real here. Ya know, we\u2019re going to continue on. I dont think he is going to be the only that will be heavily influenced by our wave and sound. I just think he was the first. And ya know, over here we\u2019re embracing it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I mean, when you\u2019re new to the game, a\u00a0Drake<\/strong>\u00a0co-sign can be nothing but beneficial.\u00a0I know what you\u2019re thinking; it\u2019s Hip-Hop<\/a>, and everyone draws inspiration from other artists. I\u2019m with you on that.\u00a0What seems really disrespectful to me though is that\u00a0Drake<\/strong>\u00a0never even credited\u00a0D.R.A.M<\/strong>\u00a0for the song. To package the track as a single of his own when he originally released it as “Cha Cha remix<\/em>” is just playing the game in a really sneaky, traitorous way.\u00a0Less than month later,\u00a0D.R.A.M<\/strong>\u00a0tweeted,\u00a0\u201cYeah, I feel I got jacked for my record…But I\u2019m GOOD.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his Fader interview from this past September, Drake even admitted to being \u201cinspired\u201d by hot tracks and making them his own.\u00a0He said:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s just, literally, I\u2019ve recognized the potential and greatness in\u00a0this piece, and I want to take my stab at it too,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ll hear people\u2019s stuff\u2026and I\u2019ll just give my interpretation of how I would have done it.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Straight jacking or inspiration? It\u2019s hard to tell. Though both tracks use a different sample, there\u2019s no denying that they sound very similar and the timing of Hotline Bling\u2019s release is suspect too. On top of everything, the fact that it was released on OVO sound radio with the title \u201cCha Cha remix<\/em>\u201d is a major red flag that this was more jacking than inspiration. But I\u2019ll leave that up to you to decide.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not all. Even the\u00a0\u201cHotline Bling\u201d<\/em>\u00a0video was called out for swag jacking by\u00a0Sauce Walka<\/strong>, member of the Houston duo the\u00a0Sauce Twinz<\/strong>. He claimed that Drake was copying the \u201cdrip\u201d style with his dance moves in the video.<\/p>\n

All things considered, did\u00a0Drake<\/strong>\u00a0really do anything when it comes to this track? He remixed\u00a0D.R.A.M\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0track (well, his producer did), and though this can\u2019t be verified, there\u2019s a good chance that it was ghostwritten for him. Of course, it takes more than that to create a single with as much success.\u00a0Drake<\/strong>\u00a0has proven time again that his formula works, but you still have to question his work ethic.<\/p>\n

You also have the issue of\u00a0\u201cToo Good\u201d<\/em>, a track off\u00a0Views From The 6<\/em>.\u00a0Keayana Cole<\/strong>\u00a0sent\u00a0Drake\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0father a snippet of one of her tracks, and next thing you know,\u00a0Drake<\/strong>\u00a0uses it on one of the most popular tracks of his new album without even given any credit to her.<\/p>\n

Views from the 6<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0Thievin in the 6<\/em>?\u00a0Should I keep going? Yeah? Ok.<\/p>\n

What about the time\u00a0Drake<\/strong>\u00a0stole\u00a04 Tay\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0lyrics on\u00a0YG\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWho Do You Love\u201d?<\/p>\n

4 Tay<\/strong>\u00a0tweeted: “New Song w\/ @YG Feat @Drake In This Song Drake Copys My Lyrics & Lines From My PlayazClub Song & Pays No Homage! ???<\/em>\u00a0\u201c<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0<\/strong>4 Tay\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0manager, their team and\u00a0Drake\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0label agreed to settle this issue out of court, with OVO paying\u00a04 Tay<\/strong>\u00a0100,000$ for straight jacking his lyrics. Winning.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0Drake<\/strong>\u00a0undeniably helps newer artists come up in the scene, as well as already established artists, in the case of\u00a0Skepta<\/strong>, his work ethic is still highly questionable.
