Being relatively small compared to most others, the 1993 established venue has attracted a surprisingly wide variety of performers across its 25 year tenure, such as the likes of\u00a0<strong>Amy Winehouse<\/strong>, <strong>Nirvana<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Stereophonics<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Radiohead<\/strong>. From observation alone, it\u2019s smaller size seemingly offers the artists something of a reprieve from far more draining stadium filler performances, often leading to a far more close and personal relationship between the spectators and the show before them.<\/p>\n<p>Opening supporting act for\u00a0<strong>Highly Suspect\u2019<\/strong>s 30<sup>th<\/sup>January appearance at \u2018The Waterfront\u2019 comes in the form of Arkansas rock artist, <strong>Welles<\/strong>. Fronted by <strong>Jeh Sea Wells<\/strong>, the only official studio member for the project, and a supportive live band, <strong>Welles<\/strong> immediately strikes a similar chord to the likes of pure 90s grunge, rocking the kind of riffs to be expected from classic\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/altwire.net\/fr\/podcast-altwire-2-0-saison-1-episode-1-robert-deleo\/\">Stone Temple Pilots<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0or <strong>Nirvana<\/strong> of the era. The performance navigates a mixture of 7-8 songs, some picked from debut 2017 EP,\u00a0<em>Codine<\/em>, such as \u2018Codine\u2019 and \u2018Hold Me Like I\u2019m Leaving\u2019, and <strong>Welles<\/strong>\u2019 effectively captures the attention of all attending in the midst of a competent, moody performance.<\/p>\n<p>Introducing\u00a0<strong>Highly Suspect<\/strong>\u00a0with instrumental track, \u2018F.W.Y.T\u2019, and starting things with an off-hand comment from frontman <strong>Johnny Stevens<\/strong> regarding how little the band has performed in the last few months, (and whether or not he can actually remember how to play the first song), the Massachusetts\u2019 band immediately goes on to kick things off with early\u00a0<em>Mister Asylum\u00a0<\/em>numbers \u2018Bath Salts\u2019 and \u2018Lost\u2019, rendering much of the crowd a bounding, bouncing mass of bodies within seconds. The band soon goes on to work their way through several fan favorites, such as \u2018Lydia\u2019 and \u2018Claudeland\u2019, while also including plenty of newer material from sophomore effort,\u00a0<em>The Boy Who Died Wolf<\/em>, such as \u2018Viper Strike\u2019, \u2018Serotonia\u2019, and hit single \u2018My Name Is Human\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>A surprising amount of the performance is also dedicated to an assortment of extended jams and unreleased material, one notable instance being a lengthy drum solo\/battle between drummer<strong> Ryan Meyer<\/strong>, and one of the band\u2019s few roadies\/stagehands. It\u2019s at some point during these many moments that the dawning realization occurs;\u00a0<strong>Highly Suspect<\/strong>\u00a0are displaying the many tell-tale signs of a band having, quite simply, an absolute blast. Alongside champagne and beer spraying, drinks mid-song, and plenty of amusing comments and expressions from Stevens directed at both his own bandmates and the audience, it\u2019s evident a family atmosphere has well and truly set in for both the performers and fans alike, taking full advantage of the venue\u2019s close and personal atmosphere, and loving every minute of it.<\/p>\n<p>While <strong>Johnny Stevens<\/strong> and Co. certainly come across as the kind of band to ridicule the phrase, \u2018tour de force\u2019, the simple fact remains that as a sheer blunt instrument of energy and infectious enthusiasm, <strong>Highly Suspect<\/strong> are about as explosive as you\u2019re likely to get.
