Michigan metalcore band De la vertu is back, and they’re bringing the heat with their latest single, “A.N.X.I.E.T.Y.” With its crushing riffs, driving beats, and intense vocals, “A.N.X.I.E.T.Y.” is a tour-de-force of metalcore energy. The lyrics delve into the all-too-real struggles of anxiety, and refusing change, painting a vivid picture of the mental turmoil that many people face daily. It’s a powerful message delivered with raw emotion, and it’s sure to resonate with listeners.
“This song is about being uncomfortable in your own skin and being so far in your own head that you allow outside factors to break you down,” says vocalist Tyler Ennis. “While you may know you need to change, not knowing how, not wanting to ask for help, not allowing yourself to be vulnerable to change — all due to the fear of the unknown, the anxiety — that’s what paralyzes us. This all isn’t talked about enough because of guilt or shame. The last few years have been very difficult for a lot of people, including us, for this reason. So we decided to speak up in case anyone felt the same way.”
It is estimated that 1 in 5 adults in America experience a mental illness. Nearly 1 in 25 (10 million) adults in America live with a severe mental illness. One-half of all chronic mental illness begins by the age of 14, and three-quarters by the age of 24. With the effects of the pandemic still front and center in many people’s minds, we are in the midst of a terrible santé mentale crisis. Recently we’ve lost many incredible artists to mental illness, and we have nothing but profound respect for any band or artist that takes the time to shed light on this tragic reality.
