There was a time when becoming a DJ involved building a record collection one purchase at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hours disappeared inside record stores. Money disappeared even faster. Every selection added into a crate had to earn its place, and when a DJ stepped behind the decks, there was no search bar waiting to rescue them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, someone can begin with a laptop, a controller and access to more music than a previous generation could have collected in a lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Felix \u201cDJ Junebug\u201d Cruz doesn\u2019t see those two worlds as enemies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe tools have changed, but the responsibility of the DJ hasn\u2019t,\u201d he says. \u201cYou still have to know how to move people, tell a story, control a room, and connect with an audience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That philosophy sits at the center of Orlando’s DJ Summit<\/strong>, the gathering Cruz created to bring DJs from different generations, disciplines and stages of their careers into the same room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Cruz, who has been part of Orlando\u2019s DJ and hip-hop community since the early 1990s, the idea grew out of something he felt the city was missing: not talent, but connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI felt like Orlando had an incredible DJ community, incredible talent, and incredible potential, but there wasn\u2019t a place that brought all sides of the DJ industry together under one roof,\u201d Cruz says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DJs were working. Manufacturers were making gear. Promoters were promoting. Retailers, educators, artists and technology companies all occupied different corners of the same ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Cruz didn\u2019t see was enough conversation between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t want to wait for somebody else to build it,\u201d he says. \u201cI kept thinking, if we need this, then why can\u2019t we build it ourselves?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo I did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Generation Gap<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n


DJ culture has always evolved alongside its equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turntables gave way to CDJs. Record crates shared booth space with laptops. Controllers, stems and increasingly sophisticated software expanded what a DJ could manipulate in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But technological convenience can also make it easy for generations to dismiss one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cruz sees more value in getting them talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vinyl generation, he argues, can pass down lessons that aren\u2019t found in software updates: patience, phrasing, song selection, digging for music and learning how to read a room when your options are limited to what you actually brought with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou had to know your music because you couldn\u2019t just search for something in a database,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Younger DJs bring a different education: digital workflows, production, emerging platforms and new ways of using technology creatively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut more importantly, they can teach each other respect,\u201d Cruz says. \u201cI don\u2019t believe one generation is better than the other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That exchange has become one of the central ambitions of Orlando’s DJ Summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a place where generations don\u2019t compete with each other, but actually learn from each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Beyond the Booth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cruz is also trying to broaden the definition of what belongs at a DJ conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Summit incorporates the things DJs expect: battles, workshops, panels, vendors, technology, veterans and emerging talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Cruz keeps returning to another phrase: Beyond the Booth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing a DJ isn\u2019t just about what happens behind the decks anymore,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s about understanding your business, protecting your health, understanding your finances, learning technology, developing your brand, creating opportunities, and figuring out how to have longevity in this industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That last word matters most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DJ careers exist in more places than ever. Clubs and festivals remain part of the landscape, but DJs now work lounges, restaurants, corporate events, sports, retail spaces, livestreams and countless other environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The job has expanded. Cruz wants the education surrounding it to expand too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In earlier conversations about the Summit, he spoke specifically about subjects that can get lost beneath conversations about equipment: hearing, vision, physical health and mental wellness. His argument is simple. A DJ\u2019s body and mind are every bit as essential to the job as the equipment sitting in front of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cruz wants someone to arrive expecting to learn about gear and leave thinking differently about their entire career. \u201cThat\u2019s the Summit I want to build.\u201d

That community-minded approach extends beyond the Summit. Cruz also organizes an annual bicycle drive for Orlando-area children after learning that some local students living in hotels were walking to school because buses would not pick them up. What began with a goal of 50 bicycles grew to 100 the following year, with Cruz leaning on the DJ community to help provide bikes and helmets.

Building Something Bigger in Orlando<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For now, Orlando remains home base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That matters to Cruz. He has watched the city\u2019s music and DJ communities develop over decades and believes it has the talent to sustain something larger. But his ambitions aren\u2019t limited by city limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the next five years, he wants Orlando’s DJ Summit to grow into one of the most important DJ gatherings in the Southeast, with an eventual national reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His vision includes manufacturers launching products, young DJs meeting the veterans who influenced them, experienced DJs passing down knowledge, businesses finding new relationships, and attendees building careers rather than simply collecting another piece of gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want people from across the country, and eventually internationally, to know that if you\u2019re serious about being a DJ, the culture, the business, the technology, and the future of this industry, you need to be at the Summit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s an ambitious goal for an event still establishing itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps that is fitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DJing itself has always been built on taking what already exists and finding a new way to connect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vinyl and controllers. Veterans and beginners. Technology and tradition. Performance and business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different pieces, brought together in the right sequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five years from now, Cruz hopes Orlando’s DJ Summit won\u2019t require much explanation at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wants the reaction to be immediate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
