{"id":8464,"date":"2017-02-05T22:01:27","date_gmt":"2017-02-06T03:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.altwire.net\/?p=8464"},"modified":"2023-12-06T06:38:28","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T11:38:28","slug":"album-review-rebel-wizard-triumph-gloom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/album-review-rebel-wizard-triumph-gloom\/","title":{"rendered":"Albumrezension: Rebel Wizard \u2013 Triumph of Gloom"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_8471\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8471\" style=\"width: 594px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8471 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altwire.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/rw_image_1-840x532.jpg\" width=\"604\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/altwire.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/rw_image_1-840x532.jpg 840w, https:\/\/altwire.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/rw_image_1-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/altwire.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/rw_image_1-768x487.jpg 768w, https:\/\/altwire.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/rw_image_1.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NKSV, the one-man army behind Rebel Wizard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bob Nekrasov, the Australian musician who records under the name <strong>NKSV<\/strong> is a man hell-bent on unleashing his fury upon the world. \u00a0Under the name <strong>Nekrasov<\/strong>, his fury is a frantic and foreboding wave of black metal. \u00a0<strong>Rebel Wizard<\/strong> is the name under which he lashes out at the world with a unique brand of nihilistic metal\u00a0he calls &#8220;negative wizard metal.&#8221; \u00a0The forthcoming 2017 LP\u00a0<em>Triumph of Gloom<\/em>\u00a0features a sonic assault that lives up to its epic name.<\/p>\n<p>Opening with the track &#8220;On The Unknown Self They Weep&#8221;, Nekrasov\u00a0establishes the core belief of negative metal:\u00a0<em>There is no real purpose for you being alive. \u00a0What are you here for anyway? \u00a0We&#8217;re nothing. \u00a0<\/em>Soft vocal samples\u00a0layered over blistering riffs and harmonized guitars answer an intriguing, albeit unasked question &#8211; What if <strong>Rob Zombie<\/strong>\u00a0had been the producer on\u00a0<strong>Iron Maiden<\/strong>&#039;S\u00a0<em>Powerslave<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>There is a lot to say about &#8220;Where We Surrender Completely To The Miserable Shaman.&#8221; \u00a0I&#8217;m an absolute sucker for songs with absurdly long titles, and this one is no exception. \u00a0This track follows the high flying NWOBHM sound of &#8220;On The Unknown Self They Weep&#8221; with full-bore thrash. \u00a0Nekrasov&#8217;s vocals run the gamut from a banshee&#8217;s wail to a demon&#8217;s growl. \u00a0The song builds to a breakdown that would have sounded right at home on\u00a0<strong>Metallica<\/strong>&#039;S\u00a0<em>Kill &#8216;Em All<\/em> before diving straight back into sonic anarchy.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"REBEL WIZARD - Trampled by Wolves and Sheep\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Yo4FhYGhH18?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Trampled By Wolves and Sheep&#8221; was my first introduction to this album. \u00a0Listening to a clip\u00a0on YouTube was enough to sell me on this album. \u00a0The lead riff is incredible, the cutting attack of\u00a0unintelligible vocals and blast beats barrel this out of control truck straight through a guardrail to certain doom &#8211; only to take flight in an incredible, <strong>Joe Satriani<\/strong>-esque guitar solo before starting it all over again.<\/p>\n<p>While &#8220;Ease of Wretchedness And Wonder&#8221; is a solid track, it unfortunately comes off as an also-ran when compared to the tracks that came before it.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, &#8220;A Spell Of Sorrow To Relieve The Curse of Triumph&#8221; contrasts the NWOBHM sound of &#8220;On The Unknown Self They Weep&#8221; with the thrash attack of &#8220;Where We Surrender Completely To The Miserable Shaman.&#8221; \u00a0This track also lives up to the songs-with-long-titles standard.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Eat The Warlock&#8221; returns to full-speed thrash. \u00a0The rhythm on this track reminds me of something between Metallica&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Ride The Lightning <\/em>Und\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/slayer-kundigen-letzte-welttournee-an\/\">J\u00e4gerin<\/a><\/strong>&#039;S <em>Herrschaft im Blut<\/em>\u00a0played back at triple speed. What I love the most is the lead guitar work, which reminds me very much of one of my favorite bands of all time,\u00a0<strong>Bang Camaro<\/strong>, and the riffs from their track &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/sorry\/index?continue=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch%3Fv%3D0HRaj_jSFXQ&#038;q=EgQtTAUnGLKY3o4GIhBQHenl92q_a5v6w5vr0oLcMgFy\" data-lasso-id=\"1518\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/sorry\/index?continue=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch%3Fv%3D0HRaj_jSFXQ&#038;q=EgQtTAUnGLKY3o4GIhBQHenl92q_a5v6w5vr0oLcMgFy\" data-old- rel=\"noopener\">Rock of Mages<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The next track, &#8220;Sorcerery&#8221; (no, that&#8217;s not a typo), features wonderful\u00a0harmonized guitar work. \u00a0Nekrasov features a very distinct guitar tone that lets each note stand out in its own glory. \u00a0Be sure to look out for some fantastic backmasked guitar as well.<\/p>\n<p>The longest track on the album, &#8220;Hemorrhage Wonders&#8221;, is also the most repetitive. \u00a0This isn&#8217;t a problem however, as the riff that repeats throughout is excellent. \u00a0For seven minutes, this track marches the album to its inevitable conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>The album&#8217;s final track, &#8220;Defenders Of The Gloom&#8221;, is a frantic blast of\u00a0NWOBHM. \u00a0While listening to this album, I kept thinking of\u00a0<strong>Daisuke Iwashitari<\/strong>&#039;S <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/sorry\/index?continue=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch%3Fv%3DV9khT_IUXUk&#038;q=EgQtTAUnGLOY3o4GIhC3Q9p-3zQNWUEonXO7lo9sMgFy\" data-lasso-id=\"1519\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/sorry\/index?continue=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch%3Fv%3DV9khT_IUXUk&#038;q=EgQtTAUnGLOY3o4GIhC3Q9p-3zQNWUEonXO7lo9sMgFy\" data-old- rel=\"noopener\">Guilty Gear<\/a> soundtrack, and how at home so many tracks on this album would feel in a video game. \u00a0This track may be the best example of that connection.<\/p>\n<p>In summation, <em>Triumph of Gloom<\/em> is a very fresh take on nihilism. \u00a0While I said <a href=\"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/2017\/01\/19\/album-review-mirrors-for-psychic-warfare\/\" data-lasso-id=\"1520\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/altwire.net\/2017\/01\/19\/album-review-mirrors-for-psychic-warfare\/\" data-old-><em>Mirrors For Psychic Warfare<\/em><\/a> painted a lonely picture of a frozen and dead world, Rebel Wizard&#8217;s negative wizard metal sound goes in the opposite direction. \u00a0This album is alive and chaotic, in a way that makes the listener feel so small in its universe. \u00a0The chaos of this album was thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best Track:\u00a0<\/strong>&#8220;Where We Surrender Completely To The Miserable Shaman&#8221;, followed closely by &#8220;Trampled By Wolves And Sheep&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Worst Track:\u00a0<\/strong>&#8220;Ease of Wretchedness And Wonder&#8221; failed to hit me the way the other tracks on the album did.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201eTriumph of Gloom\u201c von Rebel Wizard greift Elemente aus Thrash, NWOBHM und Power Metal auf und ist ein nihilistischer musikalischer Kataklysmus.<\/p>","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"episode_type":"","audio_file":"","transcript_file":"","podmotor_file_id":"","podmotor_episode_id":"","cover_image":"","cover_image_id":"","duration":"","filesize":"","filesize_raw":"","date_recorded":"","explicit":"","block":"","itunes_episode_number":"","itunes_title":"","itunes_season_number":"","itunes_episode_type":"","ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8464","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-reviews","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-50"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8464","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=8464"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8464\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=8464"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=8464"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=8464"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
