Following the release of the highly acclaimed\u00a0<\/span>Post Traumatic<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0<\/span>Mike Shinoda<\/a><\/span><\/b>\u00a0swiftly returns with the more light-hearted release,\u00a0<\/span>Dropped Frames, Vol 1\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u2013 an album created over the course of lockdown with the fans, for the fans.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Heavily inspired by fan suggestions through<\/span>out<\/span>\u00a0an ongoing series of Twitch streams,\u00a0<\/span>Dropped Frames, Vol 1\u00a0<\/span><\/i>sees the veteran musician completely at ease with experimentation,\u00a0<\/span>with each and every track playfully toying with genre influences in such a manner that both entertains, yet still delivers an excellent listening experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taking a break from a seemingly endless source of inspiration,\u00a0<\/span>Mike<\/span><\/b>\u00a0was kind enough to take some time to answer a few questions about the release, among a few other things!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AltWire [Mark Stoneman]: Hi<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Mike! First off, congratulations on the release of your newest album \u2018<\/span><\/b>Dropped Frames, Vol 1<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u2019! I suppose we\u00a0<\/span><\/b>do not<\/span><\/b>\u00a0need to ask how\u00a0<\/span><\/b>you have<\/span><\/b>\u00a0been coping with being shut indoors all day<\/span><\/b>. What was the inspiration behind beginning to stream the creative process with your music, and at what point would you say the idea of actually releasing a \u2018Twitch album\u2019 first occurred to you?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mike Shinoda: <\/span><\/b>I don\u2019t know if I even consider Dropped Frames an \u201calbum\u201d series. The live stream this music comes\u00a0<\/span>from is<\/span>\u00a0really the nucleus. I make new things every weekday from 10am to 1pm PST; at that pace, I could make an album every three weeks. So<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0releasing the music is an inevitable\u00a0<\/span>by-product<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AW: Before touching on the <\/span><\/b>more experimental side of things, \u2018Open Door\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/b>immediately\u00a0<\/span><\/b>stands out as an extremely optimistic anthem\u00a0<\/span><\/b>about overcoming adversity and achieving your goals.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Would you say that the track is something of an encouraging love letter to aspiring fans?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MS:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Sure,\u00a0<\/span>that\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0definitely one of the reads. Like most of us, I wrote it from the perspective of waiting for something to happen, for something to reveal itself and say, \u201cthis is the path that you should take next.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AW: Welcoming fans aboard to contribute to \u2018Open Door\u2019 was a wonderfully rare opportunity for newer musicians;<\/span><\/b>\u00a0with any future \u2018<\/span><\/b>Dropped Frames<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u2019 volumes that might be on the horizon, do you plan on holding more competitions for fan involvement?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MS:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Sure, if the moment seems right.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AW: A few of your recent releases aside from <\/span><\/b>\u2018<\/span><\/b>Dropped Frames<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u00a0have been collaborations. Are there any upcoming collabs you\u2019re excited for, or would like to plug?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MS:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Not at this moment!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AW: \u2018Super <\/span><\/b>Galaxtica<\/span><\/b>\u2019 sounds like something scooped up from a<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>classic arcade title<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>From having previously worked on\u00a0<\/span><\/b>film soundtracks and 8-Bit Rebellion and LP Recharge, have there been a few potential video game soundtrack<\/a> ideas\/offers in the past that intrigued you?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Are there any series you wish you could do the score for?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MS:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>I haven\u2019t been offered anything interesting, but I\u2019m open to the idea. I play Overwatch, Fortnite, and a little bit of Minecraft; I\u2019m also a big fan of Zelda,\u00a0<\/span>Halo,\u00a0<\/span>Metroid, and Mario. Most of those\u00a0<\/span>haven\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0historically gone to mainstream musicians for music or done collaborations. But anything is possible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AW: Branching <\/span><\/b>off<\/span><\/b>\u00a0that previous question,\u00a0<\/span><\/b>it is<\/span><\/b>\u00a0no secret that yo<\/span><\/b>u a<\/span><\/b>re a little bit of a gamer. We\u2019ve seen a few sessions of Animal Crossing<\/a> on your stream as of late. What are some of your all-time\u00a0<\/span><\/b>favorite<\/span><\/b>\u00a0video games,\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and else are you playing\u00a0<\/span><\/b>at the moment<\/span><\/b>?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MS:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>My t<\/span>op games would probably be Metroid, Zelda Breath Of The Wild,\u00a0<\/span>Mario 3, Mega Man (for the art, not the game itself), and Halo.\u00a0<\/span>Honorable<\/span>\u00a0mention to the Medal\u00a0<\/span>Of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Honor<\/span>\u00a0and Call Of Duty franchises.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AW: With so much of the album rooted in experimentation<\/span><\/b>\u00a0and pushing you out of your comfort zones<\/span><\/b>, have you discovered any new\u00a0<\/span><\/b>favorite<\/span><\/b>\u00a0instruments\/synthesisers that\u00a0<\/span><\/b>you could potentially see fitting in with future material?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MS:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>I\u2019m getting my Teenage Engineering OP-Z fixed, so I\u2019m excited about getting that back. And while I don\u2019t use my MPC60 on the stream, because it\u2019s too slow, I love that machine.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AW: Whilst reviewing previous <\/span><\/b>career\u00a0<\/span><\/b>material during a stream,\u00a0<\/span><\/b>when selecting your preferred tracks the term \u2018no-brainer\u2019 comes up a lot \u2013 are there a couple of \u2018no-brainer\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/b>favorites<\/span><\/b>\u00a0from \u2018<\/span><\/b>Dropped Frames, Vol. 1<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u2019 that immediately come to mind, and if so, why?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MS:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Super\u00a0<\/span>Galaxtica<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Duckbot<\/span>, Osiris, and El Rey\u00a0<\/span>Demonio<\/span>\u00a0are probably my\u00a0<\/span>favorites<\/span>. Lots of little sonic gems and happy accidents in there.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AW: I<\/span><\/b>t\u2019s<\/span><\/b>\u00a0clear from the very first glance that \u2018<\/span><\/b>Dropped Frames, Vol. 1<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u2019 was a\u00a0<\/span><\/b>fun<\/span><\/b>\u00a0creative process<\/span><\/b>\u00a0–<\/span><\/b>\u00a0a<\/span><\/b>re there any moments<\/span><\/b>\u00a0on the album<\/span><\/b>\u00a0that you perhaps were a little less thrilled about?\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MS:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>I was\u00a0<\/span>really happy<\/span>\u00a0with all these tracks, actually. I think you can tell from the names of the tracks. I wasn\u2019t sure if some of the tracks would work when I sat down to make them\u2014some of the fan requests were so random! But I think these all came out pretty good.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AW: Have <\/span><\/b>you been tempted at all to include a few \u2018<\/span><\/b>Dropped Frames, Vol. 1<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/b>tracks to future live setlists? (\u2018<\/span><\/b>Duckbot<\/span><\/b>\u2019 seems perfect for a bass-heavy\/electronic loving crowd, but \u2018Booty Down\u2019\u2026 we\u2019re looking at you.)\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

MS:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Maybe I\u2019ll just play Booty Down<\/a> 10-30 times, and go home<\/span>?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
