{"id":12802,"date":"2020-04-03T17:35:41","date_gmt":"2020-04-03T21:35:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.altwire.net\/?p=12802"},"modified":"2022-04-12T19:00:37","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T23:00:37","slug":"ten-tasty-riffs-the-material","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/ten-tasty-riffs-the-material\/","title":{"rendered":"10 leckere Riffs \u2013 Das Material"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>You know who I miss? <strong>Das Material<\/strong>.<\/h4>\n<p>Now, sure \u2013 we got the <em>Grey States<\/em> 2018 EP after a long hiatus, and the band is certainly still around\u2026 but <em>Everything I Want to Say<\/em> dropped in 2013 and suddenly that feels like a long, long time ago.<\/p>\n<p>Full of huge, pop punk\/alt rock <strong>Colleen D\u2019Agostino<\/strong>-led choruses and some excellent instrumentation across the board, <strong>Das Material <\/strong>came to prominence around the same time <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/altwire.net\/de\/aint-it-fun-to-watch-paramores-new-video\/\">Paramore<\/a><\/strong> Und <strong>Vorsatzblatt<\/strong> were hitting their stride. Fully taking advantage of the pop punk explosion of the mid-2000s and completely flourishing as a result, <strong>Das Material<\/strong> had a little something about them that always stuck in my head. And, of course, getting \u2018stuck in my head\u2019 is kind of the premise for this series.<\/p>\n<p>So, welcome back friends, for another <em>Zehn leckere Riffs<\/em>! And, as I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve noticed by now, today\u2019s focus will be on <strong>Das Material<\/strong>. As always, this isn\u2019t a \u2018best of\u2019 list \u2013 just an opportunity to talk about some excellent guitar riffs that I personally have a fun time listening to.<\/p>\n<p>#10 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8CRPnnSQCHE\" data-lasso-id=\"2879\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8CRPnnSQCHE\" data-old- rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Life Vest\u2019 (\u2018Huge\u2019 Opening Guitar Riff)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kicking off our list today is an absolute monster of a riff. After a little twangy chord progression builds <em>Nur<\/em> enough tension, the harmonics screech at 0:25 and immediately <strong>Jon Moreaux <\/strong>Und <strong>Roi Elam<\/strong> explode through the mix. The distortion. The power chords. The octaves. It\u2019s all so very, very satisfying, and showcases a somewhat heavier side to <strong>Das Material<\/strong>\u2019s discography.<\/p>\n<p>#9 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cm2E2I51TDc\" data-lasso-id=\"2880\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cm2E2I51TDc\" data-old- rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Wayside\u2019 (Dissonant\/\u2019Reverby\u2019 Main Riff)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This one\u2019s a little more subtle. Whilst the chorus guitar riff maintains the signature <strong>Das Material<\/strong> \u2018huge chorus\u2019, the opening \u2018Wayside\u2019 riff is a simple progression of reverb-heavy notes that really capture the emotional core of the track. Appearing in the bridge again before a short-but-sweet tremolo-picked solo, it\u2019s a moment that absolutely shines.<\/p>\n<p>#8 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=58eAj8sANVQ\" data-lasso-id=\"2881\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=58eAj8sANVQ\" data-old- rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Born to Make a Sound\u2019 (Breakdown\/Harmonics Riff)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I won\u2019t lie, I probably could have picked <em>beliebig<\/em> riff from this song and it would have easily qualified. The opening riff is kickass, the massive chord progression that follows kicks even <em>more<\/em> ass, even the chuggy palm-muted verse riffs keep your head bobbing relentlessly, but you know what? That brief distortion-heavy breakdown with the harmonics thrown in at 2:57? Yes. More of that please.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hCyPTuRar-s\" data-lasso-id=\"2882\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hCyPTuRar-s\" data-old- rel=\"noopener\">#7 \u2013 \u2018Appearances\u2019 (Opening\/Main Riff)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both this song and this guitar riff is classic <strong>Das Material<\/strong> at its highest order. <strong>D\u2019Agostino<\/strong> is in excellent form here, but the main guitar riff that opens\/closes the track and pops up throughout is catchy as hell and instantly recognizable to any listener of <strong>Das Material<\/strong>. Also, that cheeky little guitar squeal in the last five seconds of the track? Bloody delicious.<\/p>\n<p>#6 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UZml4z2Ajg0\" data-lasso-id=\"2883\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UZml4z2Ajg0\" data-old- rel=\"noopener\">\u2018With One Voice\u2019 (The entire 1:04 to 1:27 section)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You know what? When pop punk is done right, <em>Das<\/em> is what it sounds like. This one is a little bit of a cheat as it\u2019s not really just a riff, but this section is just too damn fun not to include in this list. The riffs are huge, the percussion even more so. It\u2019s a spectacular way to kick off the more energetic side to \u2018With One Voice\u2019 and I love it every time.<\/p>\n<p>#5 \u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Rl8XbhK2dTk\" data-lasso-id=\"2884\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Rl8XbhK2dTk\" data-old- rel=\"noopener\"> \u2018Skin and Bones\u2019 (\u2018Bendy\u2019 Lead Bridge Riff)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This one comes in at 2:15 and delivers a great example of less-is-more: in just four extremely brief stabs of guitar distortion, the emotional core of the track peaks before settling down again for the more mellow chord progression that follows. I could have probably just as easily chosen the cool lead outro, but honestly the 2:15 riff sticks in my mind far more often.<\/p>\n<p>#4 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MKBJmKtmapg\" data-lasso-id=\"2885\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MKBJmKtmapg\" data-old- rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Bottles\u2019 (Gentle Bridge Riff)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This song hits a very special place for me. The subject material resonates more than I care to admit, and after the far heavier second chorus is through we are treated to an extremely mellow section that comes in 2:12 alongside a beautifully gentle lead riff. It\u2019s very simple, but another fantastic example of less sometimes being so much more.<\/p>\n<p>#3 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eBKo2IKTREw\" data-lasso-id=\"2886\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eBKo2IKTREw\" data-old- rel=\"noopener\">\u2018No One Has to Know\u2019 (\u2018One More Time Now!\u2019)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have no shame in admitting just how much of a sucker I am for final minute of this song. It\u2019s another example of pop punk done right, and a perfect end to the <em>Tomorrow <\/em>EP.<\/p>\n<p>#2 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0gexST-CuQY\" data-lasso-id=\"2887\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0gexST-CuQY\" data-old- rel=\"noopener\">\u2018I\u2019m Alive\u2019 (Bridge Riff)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Similar to \u2018Appearances\u2019, this one is another example of an extremely catchy guitar riff in <strong>Das Material<\/strong>\u2019s arsenal. Kicking in as the 1:54 mark, this riff is just pure headbanging gold in every respect. Also, the introductory bass and guitar lead for this song is exquisite.<\/p>\n<p>#1 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LU20KxnEsGs\" data-lasso-id=\"2888\" data-old-href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LU20KxnEsGs\" data-old- rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Tonight I\u2019m Letting Go\u2019 (Outro Lead Riff)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You know what? <em>Everything I Want to Say <\/em>is full to the brim of excellent guitar riffs. We\u2019ve covered four so far, and our final guitar riff of today\u2019s <em>Zehn leckere Riffs<\/em> is another fine example of <strong>Das Material<\/strong>\u2019s lead guitarwork.
