CIGARETTES AFTER SEX\u00a0today release their new single \u201cFalling In Love\u201d, the second song to be lifted from their eagerly anticipated second album <\/strong>Cry<\/strong><\/em>, due for release on October 25th<\/sup>\u00a0via Partisan Records. The new single follows the recent release of \u201cHeavenly,\u201d which has amassed over 10 million streams in less than six weeks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recorded during night time sessions in a mansion on the Spanish island of Mallorca, Cry<\/em> is a lush, cinematic meditation on the\u00a0many complex facets of love – meeting, wanting, needing, losing\u2026 sometimes all at once.<\/p>\n

“This was one of the few songs where I had the music written before we got to Mallorca,\u201d <\/em>explains frontman Greg Gonzalez<\/strong>. \u201cI wrote the melody and chords in my apartment in Brooklyn in 2017. It wasn’t until two years later that I finally wrote the lyrics, it was during mixing and we literally had one day left. I wrote and sang the song that night, and in the performance you can hear the exhaustion and emotion of finally finishing this record.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“My girlfriend and I, our relationship was long distance for so long, so we developed as a couple mostly over the phone. The second verse is about how we would go see the same movie at the same time like it was a date, even though we were living in separate cities.<\/em><\/p>\n

I think there\u2019s something cosmic about this one. I wrote the music before our relationship started. I wasn’t in love at all then, I was just writing about love and what it’d be like to be in love again. Two years later I actually fell in love again, and that\u2019s what it took to finish the song.\u201d<\/p>\n

After decamping to Mallorca the same week that their\u00a0self-titled minimalist pop masterwork debut\u00a0<\/a>was released in 2017, Gonzalez and his bandmates –\u00a0Jacob Tomsky<\/strong> (drums) & Randy Miller<\/strong> (bass) – consciously let the striking location\u00a0guide the initial Cry<\/em> sessions.\u00a0\u201cThe sound of this record is completely tied to the location for me,\u201d <\/em>Gonzalez explains. \u201cUltimately, I view this record as a film. It was shot in this stunning, exotic location, and it stitches all these different characters and scenes together, but in the end is really about romance, beauty & sexuality. It\u2019s a very personal telling of what those things mean to me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

While the music came quickly \u2013 often improvised on the spot \u2013 it would be another two years before Gonzalez would attempt to complete the accompanying lyrics. Helped by the burgeoning love of a new relationship, the influence of films by \u00c9ric Rohmer<\/strong>, and the songs of Selena<\/strong> Und Shania Twain<\/strong> among others, Cry<\/em> blends the carnal subtlety of their debut with a warmer palette. The album was self-produced and engineered by Gonzalez, and mixed by Craig Silvey<\/strong> (Arcade Fire, Ja, ja, ja<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Cigarettes After Sex\u2019s self-titled debut has sold over 550k records to date (streaming equivalent), amassing over 360 million Spotify streams, 2.2 million monthly listeners, and 350 million YouTube streams.<\/p>\n

Cigarettes After Sex<\/strong> recently announced a run of tour dates across the UK and Europe for March and April 2020, including a stop at London\u2019s Hammersmith Apollo. The new dates follow a global headline tour this autumn, that includes UK shows at Albert Hall, Manchester on 27 November and an already sold out Shepherds Bush Empire the following night.
