What many are calling ‘the AFI and No Doubt supergroup,’ Dreamcar have finally premiered their first single “Kill For Candy” off their self-titled debut out May 12th, 2017. It’s been aย year of waitingย for eager fans of No Doubt’s Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont, and Adrian Young’s new project with AFI’s Davey Havok- and in an interview with Rollender Stein, it was revealed the wait could have been longer; the four came together for Dreamcar since 2014.

“You did an excellent job of keeping this band’s existence a secret,” Rolling Stone’s Epstein commented, Kanal responding, “Yeah! The beautiful thing is that for the first year or year and a half, it was just the four of us working on music.”

Theย new four-pieceย we now know as Dreamcar was nameless for many months, some of the earliest news about the project out in February of 2016, but the name didn’t come about until November. At the time, the 12-track record was complete and Dreamcar was barely revealing their name and looking for the best match to their needs in regards to a record label- perhaps a sequenceย more bands should risk.

“We weren’t bouncing the ideas off of managers, record companies, anybody,” Kanal refers to the creative freedom they had making the music first and by themselves; “[We’re] doing it only becauseย [we] want to get in the same room and make music together. There’s something so pure and exciting about that, and you can lose that when you’ve been doing it for a long time-.”

He continues, “When there’s lots of people involved, it can sometimes become a machine. This way, it allowed us to work in a completely pressure-free environment.”

Kanal has called the entire time and experience with Dreamcar so far as ‘a rebirth, a really beautiful, pure and positive thing.’ย  “Kill For Candy” promises a ‘Eighties New Romantic’ vibeย to theย overall sound on the album,ย yet he feels as though “what we’ve created is something very fresh and new, too.” Fans must be in agreement, for of five club shows, The Roxy and Constellation Room have completely sold out in just minutes, with their show up in San Francisco not far behind. In addition, Dreamcar have secured a spot for both weekends in Coachella.
